Black History Month

Today February 1st, marks the first day of Black History Month. Sharn recognizes this month as opportunity to honor the accomplishments of African Americans.

The origins of Black History Month began in 1962 when the Association of Negro Life and History sponsored Negro History Week. Negro History Week was chosen to be honored during the 2nd week in February in order to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Fredrick Douglas.

In the following years many cities countrywide began to recognize Negro History Week. In the late 1960’s, with credit given to the civil rights movement Negro History Week became Black History Month. In 1976 President Ford made Black History Month an annual observance and national holiday celebrated from February 1st until the last day of the month.

Sharn Enterprises celebrates Black History Month as a time to honor the accomplishments of the African American culture.
