Shopping Habits Vary With Generations

There has been so much talk recently about the ever changing future of retail. This change can be credited to the impact of technology in regards to online shopping, smart phones, etc. There is now an emphasis placed on changing the elements of shopping. It has gone from being customer service based to creating a new customer experience for consumers while shopping. The question is, which generation of consumers are we changing for? Every generation may not be prepared or conditioned for this change to a technology based shopping experience. Let’s take a look at the characteristics of millennials and baby boomers.

Millennials | We are all living in a time in which technology has become a part of our everyday lives. millennials shoppingThough millennials are more likely to use technology to improve their shopping experiences (e.g. mobile coupons, convenient online shopping, etc.). It is found that millennials mostly only shop in store when purchasing clothes. Society usually dictates their purchasing decisions because they are influenced by family and friends on what’s popular at the moment. Despite this, their ultimate decision boils down to price so they tend to do a lot more browsing than shopping.

Baby Boomers | The baby boomer generation places a high importance on customer service. In fact, they are more likely to file a complaint. They tend to be consistent with their purchases and loyal to the brands that they’ve become accustomed to. Because of this, factors such as style and price usually does not affect their purchase decisions. In fact 84% prefer to shop in store. Baby boomers seek to find savings through print ads, snail mail, and coupons.

The baby boomer generation may be the one to keep in mind when deciding on how to create your in store shopping experience. One of the most important factors to consider is that 4 out of 5 retailer’s attribute 50% of their sales to baby boomers. The baby boomer generation tends to be more successful and established than any other generation. With that being said, baby boomers have a much higher disposable income. After analyzing their holiday spending habits baby boomers usually shop without a shopping lists or budget. They are motivated by holiday sales and black Friday shopping.

Creating the Experience| In order to create a shopping experience favorable for all generations, retailers must continue to implement technology but do not neglect the distribution of coupons in newspapers, magazines, and snail mail. Remember that the baby boomer generation still looks to print ads for saving. Also, loyalty rewards program like such that exists with Walgreens, which keeps track of purchases and rewards customers with coupons based on their purchases. With baby boomers being loyal shoppers, you will be sure to see repeat customers in hopes to be reciprocated with rewards.coupons Be sure to implement incentives that will motivate customers to make purchases. “Buy One Get One Free”, and in store samples are a sure way to get your products sold.

Buy American, Hire American

On Tuesday President Trump signed an executive order to “Buy American, Hire American”. Trump says that this policy would “aggressively promote and use American made goods and to ensure that American labor is hired to do the job”.

During Trump’s first 100 days, he has implemented policies and has made statements that may concern many Americans. While some of his actions can lead to uncertainty, his “Buy American, Hire American” order is one that we can believe in.

Sharn Enterprises is an American manufacturer of custom retail product displays. We have been in business for over 43 years. During that time we have employed hundreds of American men and women, paying them fair wages and benefits. Because we purchase all of our raw materials locally, our customer’s receive that “good old” American quality at a fair price. We take great pride in our community.

With signing the execute order President Trump stated, “We believe the American strength is rooted in the ability to make things and fix things”. We at Sharn support the working men and women of this country. We hope you will too by following this simple formula: “Buy American, Hire American”.

Exercise and fitness will always be some of the best products to keep stocked in your store. All year around active customers will continue to make fitness purchases. With the weather warming up everyone is getting the necessities needed to get fit for the summer. Trending this spring in retail and fitness is athleisure wear, fitness accessories, and exercise videos. Here are some must have items and display options to consider. Be sure to keep the following items shown prominently in your store along with a custom display that will guarantee to get your products sold.

Athleisure wear | Athleisure wear is the latest buzzword in the fashion and athletic industry. It is a combination of athletic and leisure style clothing for those that want to be comfy, fit and stylish in one outfit (with no intentions of working out). Main pieces include stylish, quick drying leggings, sport bras and tanks, and a comfy running sneaker. Athleisure wear gives you comfort, fashion, and efficiency all in one. athleisure wear

Fitness accessories | While the body is the main focus, there are other things needed to assist you when you’re working out. Anything from weights, fitness watches, cell phone arm bands, and wireless headphones. Fitbits are smartwatches that track activity like heart rate, quality of sleep, steps climbed, etc. Even the simplest accessories like headbands, wristbands, and fitness bags are a must have this season. Place these items closest to check out and visible and ready for customers to grab and go on their way out. Here are some watch, bag, and headband displays we’ve made for some of our favorite customers.

Books & Videos | Not everyone is a fitness expert. So while everyone is in the “get fit” mindset and preparing for summer, this is the best time to put those popular books and videos at the forefront. IMG_0370Fitness categories like yoga, cardio, and rumba are great examples. Perhaps on a tall rotating display to give the customer easy access to browse for the video or literature best suited for their needs.

A Strong Brand

Branding is an important topic that you will hear about over and over again as a business owner. You’ll read about branding online and while speaking with business professionals. The question is: What is your “brand” exactly?

In layman’s terms your brand is your promise to your customer. It is a way to differentiate your product offering from your competitors. Its a way to tell your customers what they can expect from your products and services. With branding you are able to identify your target audience while building trust, awareness, and loyal customers which will then grow your sales.

When branding your business it is important to be consistent. Every aspect of your business from the messaging, color, and design in your advertising, marketing materials, and product displays must be consistent so that your customers can easily recognize you over your competitors. Pay close attention to how you deliver a consistent and unique look. Clearly position your product branding message and image using the following:Branding

  • website & social media accounts
  • blog
  • product displays
  • brochures, direct mail ads, social media ads
  • business cards, letter heads

Sharn Enterprises have been helping customers for 43 years build up their unique brands. We offer unique design assistance, and good old “American quality” that not only gets your products noticed but helps get them sold as well.

A Fresh Start | “Spring Cleaning Tips For Your Retail Store

Similar to the start of the new year, the arrival of spring makes way for a renewed outlook. Retail owners find motivation to make much needed changes in their store. When we think of spring cleaning we tend to think of the usual window cleaning, sweeping, and dusting. But as retail owners there are more ways than one to get clean new start on your store this spring. Here are a few spring cleaning tips for retail owners.

Clean up your inventory | Now that we are transitioning from the holidays, and into a weather change, we are sure to have older products sitting on our shelf. We don’t want these older products taking the shelf space of products that will actually sell. Spring is a good time to mark those sale items to clearance, donate any outdated items, and make way for new products. Also, it has been seen that you can increase sales by rotating /renewing your product displays and store fixtures every 12 to 18 months. 11116048_10203205548854457_660770788_nPurchasing a new display will give customers a feel of being a completely new store. Perhaps a custom display will be even better. This is a sure way to get customers in your store and your products sold.

Clean up your email & online presence | With having many demands it is easy to neglect some important areas of our business. Websites and social media presence should be a number 1 priority for your business. Update your web pages with the most recent product photos, contact information, and news for your customers to look forward to.social network Respond to any customer inquiries on your social media accounts and be sure your content is consistent across all platforms you’re using. Filter through your email to delete old and unnecessary contacts, mark spam content, and reply to those emails that your have been putting off for weeks. Having a clean inbox is guaranteed motivation to help you keep up with your business emails.

Clean up your human resources | Your staff is one your most valuable assets to your business. It is important to regularly check in with your staff to give and receive feedback from them. In the long run you’ll notice a boost in employee satisfaction which is proven to increase productivity.staff-meeting-1200x630.jpg This is a good time to evaluate your employees, update employee manuals, and do any additional training if necessary.

Store Design Tips

When arranging your store, design decisions play a huge role in whether you make a sale or not. Here are some common design strategies that retailers can employ that lead to generating more sales for your store.

  • Eye-catching displays | Or “speed bumps” as I like to call them create a focal point for customers. When customers first walk into a store there are so many products, signage, and people that act as a distraction. Be sure that your best and newest item is clearly visible and prominently displayed in order to attract customers. Incorporating a customized product display for your premium items is a sure way to get them noticed. Sharn bar displayCustomized displays like those designed by Sharn Enterprises allow you to tell your brand’s story, while separating your best products from the others.
  • Creating a path | Depends on the general size and layout of your store. Once you’ve made use of the custom displays, arrange them in your store in a way that allows for maximum exposure to most of your store’s products. You want to literally create a pathway of displays in the store that will direct traffic starting from the entry point and ending at checkout. The goal is to be sure the customer has seen the most products possible.
  • three-tier-bracelet-bar13 x 10 Acrylic SignMake the most of your checkout space | You’ve caught their eyes with the display, guided them throughout the store, now the point of sale station is your last chance to get shoppers to purchase those last minute impulse items. Make use of your checkout counters by displaying products close by. Given there is little space, multi tier displays allow you to stack more products than a traditional display. Also take advantage of the wall behind the counter to make room for more signage that tells the customers of current promotions or store information.
